Sonata in G minor BWV 1020

Bach wrote beautifully for oboe, as many obbligato parts in the cantatas convincingly demonstrate, but precious little for oboe and keyboard. However, since Bach himself was an inveterate arranger, and since the range of the flute and oboe was much the same in Bach’s day, oboists can legitimately turn to the flute sonatas to enlarge their repertoire. The only problem with the Sonata in G minor BWV 1020 is that it is not by Johann Sebastian Bach but, it is thought on stylistic grounds, to be by his son Carl Philipp Emanuel. Even so, with its tuneful outer movements and its particularly attractive Adagio, it is by no means unworthy of its Bach branding.
