Ah, Love, but a day! (1900)
by Amy Beach (1867–1944)
The second of Beach’s Three Browning Songs is particularly interesting for the change of mood half-way through where, to emphasise the poet’s growing anxiety, the composer drops the caressing counter-melody that seductively weaves itself round the vocal line in the first stanza.
