Pastorale (1921)

In the summer of 1921 Copland was a student at the American Conservatory in Fontainebleau, which no doubt explains the clear influence of Messiaen in a piano part which at first seems uneasy in the company of the rapturous vocal line but which joins it at the end in a beautifully achieved reconciliation.
