Just about all the music by which César Franck is known today - less than a dozen major pieces - was written in the last ten years of his life. Revered by his pupils as “le père Franck” and renowned for his post-service improvisations as organist at Sainte Clotilde in Paris, in his late fifties and sixties Franck wrote
