Whoever wrote the text of the Sailor’s Song which opens the second book of Haydn’s English Canzonettas, he or she certainly gave the composer ample opportunity for evoking nautical sounds in the accompaniment – an opportunity which, while keeping his tune buoyantly afloat, Haydn accepted with evident enthusiasm.
