Among the more obscure of Haydn’s vast catalogue of chamber works is a set of six sonatas for violin and cello written at Eszterháza in the early 1770s. Thanks, however, to an arrangement for cello and piano by the 19th-century Italian cellist and composer Alfred Piatti, one of them has become relatively well kown as the Cello Sonata in C major. In the absence of an authentic Haydn cello sonata Piatti’s arrangement is a very acceptable substitue with a particularly attractive Tempo di Menuetto theme and variations.
