Trois pièces brèves (1930)
by Jacques Ibert (1890–1962)
Movements
Allegro
Andante
Allegro scherzando
Although he was never a member of Les Six, Ibert was no less accomplished than the best of them in the art of irreverence. Written at about the same time as his outrageous Divertissement, his Trois Pièces brèves (Three Short Pieces) are less provocative than that work but scarcely less engaging. A recklessly energetic sort of jig with a cleverly developed middle section is followed by a melodically charming Andante and a tuneful, gently parodistic scherzando finale.
