Aragonaise from Le Cid

by Jules Massenet (1842–1912)

There is another jota, though of a rather more Parisian kind, in the ballet music Massenet wrote for his Spanish opera Le Cid in 1885. One of a set of seven similar pieces assembled for a fiesta in the main square of Burgos, it is described here as an “Aragonaise,” after the region of Aragon in northern Spain where this energetic dance with its tirelessly repetitive rhythms originates.
