Le Nozze di Figaro (The Marriage of Figaro): “Non più andrai”

One of the most popular arias in all opera, “Non più andrai” is addressed by Figaro to Cherubino, the adolescent page to Count Almaviva, whose precocious behaviour has so angered his master that he is being sent off with a commission to join the army in Seville. To appropriately march-time rhythms, Figaro wittily taunts Cherubino with a vivid description of what is in store for him once he is in uniform - no more flirting with the girls but the hardships of warfare. The applications of full-scale military scoring for horns, trumpets and drums in the middle and at the end of the aria colourfully emphasise his point.
