Oblivion
by Astor Piazzolla (1921–1992)
The original version of Oblivion, from Piazzolla’s score for a film version of Pirandello’s Enrico IV, features the composer’s own instrument, the bandoneón with piano and strings. The beauty of the piece is not so much in its instrumental colouring, however, as in its achingly nostalgic melodic line, which suits the clarinet at least as well as any of the several other instruments that have adopted it by way of a variety of arrangements. Not the most dynamic of Piazzolla’s tango inspirations, although the characteristic rhythm is always discreetly present in the bass, it is probably the most popular.
