“Where Paris is concerned,” Poulenc once confessed, “I am often moved to tears and music.” There are no tears in his settings of two Max Jacob absurdities with Parisian associations but the musical content is delightful in both cases – the first assuming a lyrical tone for the change of scene to the Pont de Iéna in the last stanza, the other retaining its patter-song virtuosity throughout.
