Mariä Wiegenlied Op.76 No.52 (1901-3)

The Mariä Wiegenlied is rare in Reger’s vast output of music for its melodious simplicity. While its rocking rhythm remains much the same throughout, its harmonies are heightened by a tender modulation in the middle of the second stanza. It was never going to depose Brahms’s Wiegenlied (to be heard later in today’s programme) but it does deserve a regular place in at least the Christmas repertoire.
