Alexander Skryabin (1872-1915)

2 Pieces Op.59 (1910)

Poème: Allegretto, avec grace et douceur,

Prélude: Sauvage, belliqueux

The two Pieces Op.59 present a violent contrast. As its tempo heading suggests, the Poème is all grace and sweetness in spite of its disolacted rhythms, its ninths, elevenths and even thirteenths and its pitch displacements in the right hand. The Prélude, on the other, is “savage, bellicos” not least because of its percssive left hand pouncing on the bottom end of the keyboard and the frequently aggressive use of the so-called and undeniably dissonant “Promethus chord.”
