Eduard Strauss (1835-1916)

Alpenrose (Alpine Rose) Polka-mazurka, Op.127

Unter der Enns (Below the Enns) Polka-schnell, Op.121

Although neither Alpine Rose nor Below the Enns can be said to rank very high among Eduard Strauss’s most catchy titles, they are both highly attractive little dances: the first is a charming example of the graceful triple-time polka-mazurka, which in this case is not so very different from a slow waltz; the second is a breathlessly cheerful polka-schnell indicating that, given the right kind of music, social life on the Enns was no less exciting than that on the Danube.
